In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria was an ancient port that hasn’t infrastructure and minimum conditions to dock and passenger transfers. Therefore they had to travel in small rowing boats and sailing till the port. The "cambullonero" was the person who made small business transactions through barter from ships and small shops situated on the ground. It produced competitions between “cambulloneros”, so they established small races, in order to complete as many of transactions.
Currently, the sport of Canarian Lateen Sailing is an important event on the island and has a lot of followers. It was declared native sport of Canary Islands.
Canarian Lateen Sailing is a feat of naval architecture. The boats have a length of 6.5 meters with a large sail, 13 feet high, 32 square meters of sail area.
The racing calendar follows the annual cycle of winds between March and October.
The race, usually on Saturdays at 17:00, is a true spectacle because the event concentrated a lot of people on the seafront of the capital. The special characteristics of the Bay of Palmas de Gran Canaria allow fans to watch the competition from the ground.
The races are celebrated between the seaside neighborhood of San Cristobal, in the south of Gran Canaria's city, and Alcaravaneras beach, near the marina, where after the last race clubs have their bases involved in competition.
Currently, each ship has 11 crew, including the pattern who synchronizes the maneuvers to change the course.
